Cupping Therapy

Cupping is an ancient technique in Traditional Chinese Medicine therapy used to alleviate pain and tension. It can be used on its own or in conjunction with other therapies such as massage. There are many methods of cupping with fire being the more traditional method. Vacuum cupping is the more modern method and is increasing in popularity.

In fire cupping a glass cup is warmed before being placed on the skin to create a vacuum which draws up the skin and superficial muscle layers. The cup can be left in place to target specific spots or moved across the skin to mimic the rolling action of deep tissue massage without the discomfort.

In vacuum cupping plastic cups are applied to the skin using a suction handle which the practitioner uses to control the level of suction applied.

Regardless of the method used the benefits are the same.

Cupping is one of the best deep tissue therapies available. The suction and negative pressure created can help to stimulate and drain excess fluids and toxins, loosen adhesions and lift connective tissues. Cupping increases blood circulation to the areas where the cups are placed, which may increase overall blood flow and stimulate cell repair.

Fire cupping has historically been used to treat many conditions such as chronic back pains, arthritis, swollen and painful joints, respiratory problems, cellulite reduction and anxiety and depression.

Some redness/purple patches at the cupping sites can occur but would normally clear within 10 days.
